Apheresis center training programs | Spectra Optia

Overview

Looking for Spectra Optia™ Apheresis System training programs that boost skill confidence and improve efficiency? Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies has you covered.

With decades of experience in creating global apheresis technologies and best practices, Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies is pleased to provide comprehensive, interactive apheresis nurse training and apheresis technician training specifically for those professionals who operate the Spectra Optia system.

Our Successions training workshops are held in person and are typically hosted by a hospital, blood center, or nonprofit healthcare organization for apheresis staff and other interested apheresis professionals in the area.

Email us today at Successions@TerumoBCT.com about attending or hosting an apheresis training workshop.

Benefits

With continuing therapeutic apheresis education, you can support several key apheresis center and blood center operational objectives, such as:

  • Improving collection yield and quality
  • Achieving reliable, efficient procedures based on best practices
  • Increasing operator confidence and job satisfaction, which supports staff retention
  • Enhancing patient/donor experiences and safety
  • Minimizing risks and reducing errors

About Successions training

Our advanced apheresis educational workshops are presented by a team of senior clinical specialists and technical excellence leaders with a deep understanding of apheresis therapeutic protocols and processes on the Spectra Optia system. Their goal is to help more blood centers, apheresis centers, and hospitals improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency related to apheresis cell collections and exchanges.

During training, participants will add to their Spectra Optia system knowledge via in-depth procedural discussions, case study reviews, troubleshooting guidance, and peer networking.

Who should attend

Our Successions workshops are designed for apheresis nurses and other professionals who want to take their therapeutic apheresis knowledge to the next level and who have at least one year of experience using the Spectra Optia system.

Continuing education credits are issued after workshop completions, based on the sessions attended. These educational programs have been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Available Workshops

The AC Management Successions program includes the following topics:

  • Review of primary and secondary hemostasis
  • Hemostasis in apheresis procedures, including how ACD-A prevents clotting in the circuit, the use of the Correct Connect AC delivery system, and the AC fluid pathways for both collections and exchanges
  • AC management principles for the AC pump, AC infusion rate, and inlet:AC ratio
  • How to troubleshoot clumping during an apheresis procedure by assessing the centrifuge connector and the Automated Interface Management (AIM) system images
  • Steps for resolving clumping before a clot forms
  • Honing skills with a review of case studies for both clumping and citrate reactions

The Cell Collections Successions program includes the following topics:

  • An overview of various cell collection targets and their therapeutic potential, including hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and T cells, and the sources of HSCs in the body
  • Exploration of the basics of cell collections to include both mononuclear cell collection (MNC) and continuous mononuclear cell collection (CMNC) protocols
  • The separation interface and how various factors influence how cells separate in the whole blood
  • How to troubleshoot the Spectra Optia AIM System alarms and prevent buffy coat accumulation
  • Strategies for optimizing your cell collection procedures with better troubleshooting techniques, including how to calculate collection efficiency to measure productivity

The RBCX Successions program includes the following topics:

    • Overview of sickle cell disease, its pathophysiology with signs and symptoms, and current treatment pathways
    • Review of RBCX procedures including exchange, depletion, and depletion/exchange — including how Spectra Optia manages the hematocrit (HCT) in the patient and tubing set
    • Considerations for prescribing RBCX and the clinical benefits of iron-neutral procedures
    • Procedural considerations for vascular access, how to determine the appropriate fraction of cells remaining (FCR), and managing the procedure — with discussions of single-needle access
    • Advancing the apheresis practice for RBCX through discussion around the ideal standard operating procedure
    • Honing skills with a review of case studies using the RBCX app

The TPE Successions program includes the following topics:

    • An overview of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE)
    • Reviewing the types of devices used for TPE and the differences between these devices
    • Exploring the mechanism of action of a TPE procedure
    • Considerations for clinical guidelines regarding the use of TPE and current treatment options
    • Understanding fluid balance fluctuations and types of replacement fluids
    • Exploring vascular access options when performing a TPE procedure
