Mariah J. Scott was told by doctors that she shouldn't have children because of her sickle cell disease. She thought her dreams of motherhood were doomed. But that didn't stop Mariah from writing her own story.
She is a self-described Sickle Cell Warrior, epidemiologist and patient advocate working to change how the world and healthcare providers see sickle cell patients. In this powerful story, Mariah shares her journey through self-advocacy, pain crises and pregnancy.
She encourages other people with sickle cell not to let their disease take away their dreams but rather to envision the life they want. Her joy is a beacon of light for other sickle cell warriors in her community, both in her hometown in New Jersey and around the world.
"I have sickle cell. Sickle cell doesn't have me," she says.
